TiC 'Half A Sixpence' 2017
Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to be the Musical Director for "Half A Sixpence" performed by Theatre in the Community, Rhyl. The show was performed in The Pavilion Theatre, Rhyl (a 1,030 seater!) and there was budget to get a three-piece live band! This was a special opportunity for me because I was a member of this drama group when I was younger, I always wanted to be in the orchestra pit rather than on the stage.
It turned out to be incredibly strenuous to maintain three part-time jobs in Bristol whilst producing the orchestral backing tracks and traveling to North Wales for each rehearsal, so I resigned my 'day-job', knowing I'd easily get a similar (if not better) one when I'd return after show week. After two months of realising the piano score into full orchestral tracks for rehearsals and the show, show week quickly approached...
The show was a success and received high praise including "I think it may be one of the best shows I have seen at the Rhyl pavilion and as good as some of the professional West-end shows!", "a flawless band in a hugely enjoyable production" and "I thought I was watching a show in the West End". An audience member actually from Folkstone (where the musical is set) personally congratulated the band after a show and was amazed that it was a youth production.
I'm incredibly grateful for the help and support of the team at TiC and hope to work with them again in the future!
